There are ways to diagnose if your infection is bacterial or viral. Sometimes, your doctor can distinguish your disease through your medical history and symptoms. An example of this claim is when you have chickenpox or measles because there are no lab tests needed as their symptoms are easily diagnosed once you do a physical examination.

In addition, a medical expert will put the possibility of having a particular infection in their diagnosis when an epidemic is present. Influenza is an example of this condition as there are seasons where this disease is rampant. This situation is also relevant today as most of the symptoms of COVID-19 is similar to influenza.

Another way of knowing your condition is by having a sample for the doctors to culture. The samples that can be cultured are blood, mucus, sputum, urine, stool, skin, and cerebral spinal fluid. When a microorganism is cultured, your doctor can determine which infection you have and what kind of antibiotic treatments you should take.

The best way to prevent a virus or bacteria from infecting your body is by vaccination. Some examples of vaccine-preventable diseases are measles, influenza, tetanus, and whooping cough. Babies are mostly vaccinated, so they would never have to catch these diseases, or if they do, the effect of the illness is drastically lowered.

Another way of preventing a viral or bacterial disease from spreading is by not going out if you are sick. If you are living with your partner, practicing protected sex is advisable, as some viruses can be spread sexually. Cooking your food thoroughly and protecting yourself against bug bites are also recommended to prevent the spread of diseases.
